Pete and Steve - our 4th boat to row the Atlantic
Fuelled for the Ocean: Supporting Steve and Pete of Dragonfish Row on Their Atlantic Crossing
‘‘I knew they’d worked with two ocean rowing teams in the past so had the expertise that we needed and put together a seamless plan to increase weight healthily, increase strength and reduce our chances of injury both in the lead up to the row and during our crossing.’’ Steve Hayes
Rowing 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic is no small feat. For Steve and Pete, the duo behind Dragonfish Row, it was a challenge of endurance, mental strength, and meticulous preparation. We were proud to support their incredible journey with a fully tailored performance nutrition strategy—from day one of training to their final stroke at sea.
The Challenge
Taking on the world’s toughest rowing race meant:
2 hours rowing, 2 hours resting, around the clock
An average of 10,000 kcal burned per day
Limited space, limited sleep, and no fresh food for nearly two months
A total race time of 54 days, 16 hours, and 45 minutes
With that kind of demand, nutrition needed to do more than fuel, it had to sustain performance, protect health, and stay enjoyable.
The Solution
We worked with Steve and Pete for 12 months leading up to their row, creating a comprehensive fuelling strategy that included:
Monthly InBody770 body composition scans to monitor progress and support planned weight changes
Pre-race healthy weight gain, with a strategy to safely lose it during the race
A meticulously built 5,500 kcal daily food pack, designed for high-energy output, variety, and gut comfort
A supplement protocol to boost immunity and support recovery
Hydration and electrolyte management tailored to long-term endurance in extreme conditions
Every detail was tested in training to make sure the race packs were not only functional but enjoyable and reliable under pressure.
The Results
Steve and Pete crossed the Atlantic in 54 days, 16 hours, and 45 minutes with:
Zero gastrointestinal issues throughout
Body weight loss exactly as planned
Consistent energy and recovery from their daily fuel packs
A successful, safe, and inspiring crossing as Dragonfish Row
Their achievement is a testament to grit, preparation, and the power of a fuelling plan that goes the distance.
Huge congratulations to Steve and Pete - Dragonfish Row - on an epic crossing, expertly executed and fuelled to perfection.
